Woolly Worm Festival Celebrates 40th Anniversary

According to lore, woolly worms (a type of caterpillar) can predict the severity of winter based on how much black is on their bodies. On Oct. 21-22, the town of Banner Elk will celebrate the 40th Annual Woolly Worm Festival.

In addition to woolly worm races, the festival features crafts, food, live entertainment and more. Last year’s festival attracted an estimated 16,000 fans and 160 vendors.

The event is co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk and the Avery County Chamber of Commerce. There is a small admission fee, but all proceeds benefit the local community.
