A permit issued by the Federal Regulatory Commission brings the actualization of the 600-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline a bit closer to North Carolinians. The permit, a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, is one milestone, but state permission is also required.

The controversial natural gas pipeline would pump fracked gas from Virginia through North Carolina, affecting eight counties including Northampton, Halifax, Nash, Wilson, Johnston, Sampson, Cumberland, and Robeson.

Some environmental groups and landowners have spoken out against the pipeline, while economic developers have publicly supported the endeavor as a way to help entice manufacturing jobs to the affected areas.
