How Elvis said goodbye to the Charlotte Coliseum

by The 100 Companies

Before the Bojangles Coliseum existed, there was the Charlotte Coliseum in its stead. The coliseum opened in 1955, home to the largest unsupported steel dome in the U.S., making it an architectural marvel for its time.

A year later Elvis Presley played there for the first time. At the end of that 1956 concert, he promised he would return and indeed he did five more times in his career.

Donning his trademark jumpsuit, Elvis played the coliseum for the last time on Feb. 21, 1977, one of his final performances before his passing on Aug. 16 that same year.
