Rose Bowl and Durham

Rose Bowl football game

Nothing is more American than New Year’s Day football, and the highlight is playing the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Right? Wrong.

For one time in its history, it was played in Durham. Hard to believe, but true.

After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, there was a lot of fear that the game a few weeks later would invite attack. There was talk of canceling the game, but an invitation by Duke University moved the game to Durham.

That may have saved the game but the Blue Devils still lost to the Oregon State Beavers 20-16.
