Refining a talent

A basket being weaved

We’ve admired the basket weaver’s talent, as well as that of the wood carver and the folk dancer. And then we wonder, “Where did they learn to do that?”

There is talent in all of us, but one place you can go to discover it is the John C. Campbell Folk School, located in the North Carolina mountains near Brasstown.

Folkehojskole (folk high schools) had been an educational mainstay in Denmark, and John Campbell and his wife Olive wanted to educate those in Appalachia. After John died, Olive and friend Marguerite Butler, along with residents, started the school in 1925.
