Brown Mountain Lights are a spectacle of mysterious lights that have been spotted moving through valleys in Pisgah National Forest for generations.

The earliest reports came from Cherokee and Catawba Indians. Legend says the tribes fought a great war at Brown Mountain, and the lights are ghost maidens searching for men who died in battle.

The US government investigated the lights three times, and they were even spotlighted on “X-Files” in 1999. Thousands have witnessed the phenomena, which is ongoing today.

You can look for the lights from spectacular mountain views in the Linville Gorge, or even atop Table Rock Mountain.
