A barren circle 40 feet in diameter lies in the pine woods of Chatham County, just south of Siler City. Known as the Devil’s Tramping Ground, folklore says it’s where the devil himself paces in a circle every night, pondering what evil acts he’ll reap next.
But there’s a genuine mystery to this place. Not a single living thing will grow or sprout in the circle – and many have tried, even transplanting healthy plants only to watch them wither and die.
Legend also says if you place an object in within the circle at night, it will disappear by morning.
