Dance on the Beach

by

In 2015, North Carolina designated the shag as the official “popular dance” of the state. If you’re new here, shagging is a slotted swing dance that shares many features with the jitterbug and East Coast swing.

Shaggers dance to “beach music,” a broad genre that includes R&B, soul and even disco that is popular in coastal dance clubs.

Celebrate shag culture at the 31st Annual Carolina Beach Music Festival June 4 at Carolina Beach. It’s the longest-running beach music festival held on the beach. Performers will include North Tower, Band of Oz, and Jim Quick and Coastline.
