Paul Lewis Phillips is an avid phillumenist. That is, he’s a collector of matchbooks.
“When my coin collection was stolen from my home many years ago,” Lewis explained, “I wanted to collect something that nobody in his right mind would steal.”
Early on Lewis grew his collection and enjoyed trading matchbooks with other collectors, but over time, he could no longer find anyone to trade with. That’s when inspiration struck: Lewis would craft art pieces using only the matchbooks.
Lewis’s art is unique. Each piece is a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind mosaic entirely covered with pieces of matchbooks.
