Keep It Clean: Car Filter Basics

by

Every vehicle has three primary filters to handle dirt, contaminants and harmful debris. Each needs to be kept clean and in good repair. Clogged filters decrease function and performance.

Air filters protect the engine — a dirty filter forces the engine to work harder, which reduces fuel economy and boosts emissions. Cabin filters protect drivers and passengers from pollution, allowing fresh air to flow through the A/C system. Fuel filters protect the fuel system and help maximize fuel economy and engine power.

Generally, filters should be replaced every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for specifics.
