Virtual time machine chronicles Charlotte’s growth

Virtual time capsule

Charlotte has been one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities over the past several years, according to census data. Thanks to a new tool from Mecklenburg County, you can see firsthand just how much the city’s landscape has been altered as a result of its growth.

A virtual “time machine” allows users to compare modern-day satellite images with those as far back as 1978.

As the Charlotte Observer points out, a lot has changed in the city since 1978. For example, there was no light rail or even an uptown skyline, and the city’s population has more than doubled.
