Known as the first child born in the New World, Virginia Dare may not have disappeared with her Roanoke kinsmen in 1590. Legend claims she survived, raised in an indigenous Algonquian community as Winona.
She grew into a beautiful woman and declared her love for a nobleman named Okisko. This enraged the local witch doctor, who transformed her into a white doe in retaliation. A hunt for the deer ended with Winona dead in her lover’s arms.
Today, hunters still emerge from the wilderness of Dare County with stories of a phantom white deer – thought to be Virginia’s ghost – eluding them.
