In the 1930s, a local distributor of Shell Oil called Quality Oil created a new way for its brand to stand out as the top choice for car owners to fuel up. Eight gas stations in the shape of a clamshell were built in Winston-Salem and Kernersville.
Today, only one of those stations remains, located on the corner of Sprague and Peachtree Streets, and is currently protected by Preservation North Carolina. The station sits as a museum for itself, filled with antique cans, old Shell signs, and remnants of an era in which car ownership was just starting to boom.
