The innovation called Cheerwine

L.D. Peeler began his career investing in Kentucky-based Mint-Bottle Soda Company. After he and his counterparts opened a franchise location in North Carolina, the corporation went bankrupt, and they changed the name to North Carolina Beverage Corporation.

A few years later, in 1917, Peeler decided to create a soda unlike anything else on the market. There was a sugar shortage at the time, so he sought alternative sweetening methods. He was approached by a Kentucky man who sold him the cherry flavor that gives Cheerwine its distinct taste.

The beverage has remained a North Carolina staple for over 100 years.
