In what is being described as one of the most innovative government projects in North Carolina, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners recently agreed to use the site of a former county landfill as a solar farm.
According to Brownie Newman, chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, finding appropriate sites for solar farms in the mountains “is a challenge.” The former landfill site is unique because it sits on 25 acres of flat land in an otherwise mountainous region.
The solar farm is projected to create 18% of all of the energy necessary to support Buncombe County government.
