As National Ice Cream Day, July 14 is one of the happiest days of the year!
The delicious confection dates back to second century BC, although no individual is credited with its creation. Historical figures have been reported to imbibe in versions of ice cream, including Alexander the Great, Caesar and Charles I. In 1660, ice cream was made available to the general public.
Today, $5.5 billion in ice cream is sold annually. As expected, chocolate and vanilla, in that order, are most popular. Research on national ice cream tweets showed coffee and cookie dough are also universally loved.
