Preserving the location of Roanoke Colony, the first English settlement in what is today the United States, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site invites you to step back in time to see English New World settlements from 1584 to 1590, when settlers mysteriously disappeared.
Located just four miles north of Manteo, the site also strives to preserve the history of the Indigenous tribes of the area and the formerly enslaved people who established a Freedmen’s Colony here in 1862.
Walk through immersive exhibits, watch a documentary, check out historic architecture and artifacts, and journey through time in this scenic location.
