South of Asheboro, in the Uwharrie Mountains, the North Carolina Zoo remains the largest natural habitat zoo in the U.S.

Natural habitat means all of the animals are given “trees, ponds, rocks, grass and dirt” resembling their territory in the wild. Divided among Africa, North America and the Aviary, these exhibits house hundreds of different animals and thousands of unique plant life.

The North Carolina Zoo offers visitors a chance to learn about foreign flora and fauna through a normal walk-through; it also offers tours of the 40-acre grassland exhibit and camps for children interested in becoming veterinarians.
