Talking to children about racism

Educate yourself. I’ve seen this advice across my social feed countless times in the past few weeks and I agree, educating yourself about racism is key to stopping it. As a parent, guardian or teacher, how does that translate to young children?

Research has shown children notice racial differences as early as preschool, and ignoring those differences only leads to negative outcomes. Instead, give them a safe space to observe and celebrate their unique identities. One resource is to introduce books that speak on racism – some options can be found here.

Lastly, encourage their questions instead of shutting them down.
