It was bloody and never pretty. In the early days of the North Carolina colony, Native Americans inhabited the land and none were more powerful than the Tuscarora.
Colonists wanted the land for exploration and war broke out, leaving many dead and injured on both sides. The biggest battle came at the Tuscarora fort of Nooherooka in 1713, located in what is now Greene County, where the Tuscarora were defeated. By war’s end, over 200 colonists and approximately 1,000 Native Americans were killed.
The tribe’s remnants relocated to Pennsylvania and New York, and colonists continued to settle the state.
