Mecklenburg County is the largest county in NC and home to Charlotte, the 17th largest city in the country.
For over 50 years, Charlotte led the nation in gold production until the California Gold Rush of 1848. The gold rush there began in 1799. Billy Graham (worldwide evangelist and unofficial pastor to nearly every US president since WWII) was born and raised in Charlotte, and now his library and ministry headquarters are located on the highway named after him.
The county is home to dozens of museums, libraries, and music and entertainment venues visited by hundreds of thousands each year.
