Iron Dukes’ Heartbreak

They were the Iron Dukes for a reason. The 1938 Duke regular season football team was both undefeated and unscored upon. Not a single point.

Duke was invited to play the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl, Duke’s first bowl appearance. The game was a classic. Neither team scored until Duke kicked a field goal in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.

They appeared to be in great shape as no one had scored against them all season – until USC threw a touchdown pass with a minute to play. The only points allowed all season. The only loss.
