Edward Teach, better known as the pirate Blackbeard, terrorized the Atlantic in the early 18th century. He had a ferocious reputation, but finally met his match on Nov. 22, 1718 when he was tracked down by Lt. John Maynard to Ocracoke Island and killed after a fierce battle.
The triumphant Maynard cut off Blackbeard’s head and hung it at the bow of his ship after tossing his body into the inlet. Ever since, a mysterious light has been seen moving in the water of the inlet.
Local lore says it’s the ghost of Blackbeard searching for his missing head.
