The North Carolina Poet Laureate is meant to advocate for the power of poetry and show how the written word impacts the hearts and minds of people everywhere. Jaki Shelton Green, the state’s current Poet Laureate, believes her role is to illuminate the stories of those who are too little heard.
Green, who was first appointed in 2018 and then reappointed in 2021, is an award-winning author of eight collections of poetry. She’s been published in over 80 national and international publications. She is the first African American and only the third woman to serve as the state’s Poet Laureate.
