Named after Lutheran Elizabeth College, Charlotte’s Elizabeth neighborhood began rapidly growing after a trolley line was completed in 1902. Five years later, it was established as a part of Charlotte.
In its early years, Elizabeth was one of the most fashionable residential areas of the city. Independence Park, the first public park in Charlotte, was built in the neighborhood in 1924.
Today, Elizabeth is one of the city’s most pedestrian-friendly and walkable areas, with numerous sidewalks and canopy-covered residential streets. A section of the neighborhood –the Elizabeth Historic District – is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
