History has not been kind to Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States. But there is more to the man than just being the man who came to office after the Lincoln assassination and then being impeached (not convicted).
Here are facts omitted from most history books:
Johnson was born in Raleigh, taught himself to read and write, became a successful businessman, was Tennessee governor a member of the US House and Senate. In fact, he became the only former president to ever later serve in Senate.
Talk about a self-made man with a bad rap!
