On August 6, we remember the day that changed the world – the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima to end World War II. Atomic blasts make history books, but most don’t know we almost had one here.
It was the height of the Cold War in January 1961 and US policy was to have nuclear-armed bombers aloft at all times. On a flight to Seymour AFB near Goldsboro, NC, a bomber developed trouble and eventually crashed trying to land. Seven of eight switches armed a weapon. Only one switch saved a nuclear explosion!
Goldsboro residents slept peacefully, unaware.
