Can He Play Golf?

“Can he play golf?”

That’s the question Athletic Director Jim Weaver posed to golfer Buddy Worsham, whom he had recruited to come to Wake Forest College (located in Wake Forest before it moved to Winston-Salem and became a university).

Worsham wanted to come to Wake Forest to play golf, but he wanted his good friend to accompany him. Worsham was the star recruit, and Weaver didn’t want to miss him. So he relented.

Turned out the friend could play golf. And play it well. The late Arnold Palmer put Wake Forest golf on the map. Then later the PGA.
