William Lenoir had a defiant attitude.
He realized that on a schoolmaster’s salary in 1778 he would not be able to support his family in the style he desired, so he studied and became a surveyor.
He moved his young family from the safe confines of Edgecombe County to the then North Carolina frontier near the Yadkin River. He built a fort to protect against Indian raids and called it, what else, Fort Defiance.
When he built his home place in 1792, there was no other name to call it other than Fort Defiance. It is open for tours today.
