North Carolina has long been associated with what many call the Bible Belt, and North Carolina Baptists have been a part of that fabric since it was a new colony.
The state’s first Baptist church, Shiloh Baptist, was established on September 5, 1729, by Paul Palmer. North Carolina had become a Royal Colony earlier that year, and the residents of the Shiloh settlement in Camden County petitioned the government for a house of worship other than the Church of England.
The petition was granted, and congregants began meeting in the new church. Today the church is still fulfilling its ministry.
