Through the #MeToo movement, women all over the world started sharing experiences regarding sexual misconduct. Initially founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke, the movement focused on supporting survivors of sexual violence, particularly young girls of color.
The movement received a boost in attention when actress Alyssa Milano published a tweet calling for solidarity between women who had experienced sexual harassment.
Since then, the movement has even branched out to address sexual harassment in middle and high schools, and safer work conditions in low-wage work environments. TIME magazine even featured these “Silence Breakers” as its 2017 Person of the Year.
