The NFL is funding a $2.3 million three-year study on concussions at Elon University. The research will focus on the effectiveness of active rehabilitation by analyzing sports, including football, rugby, soccer and basketball. Elon treats 30-40 concussions annually.
Researchers will look for differences in recovery time if treatment occurs before symptoms disappear. “Right now, the protocol is to not do any rehab until they are asymptomatic,” said Caroline Ketcham, Elon’s BrainCARE Research Institute co-director. “Through the study, trainers will be involved with active rehabilitation measures sooner.”
Athletes from Elon, professional teams and other schools will participate.
