What better way to bid summer farewell than cruising the Carolina coastline on a trail dotted by our seven lighthouses?
Start in Edenton at Roanoke River and work your way east to Currituck Beach, then head south to Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke and Cape Lookout, before ending on Bald Head Island, where “Old Baldy” stands after 203 years.
You can still climb most of the lighthouses for a small fee, and the views awaiting you at the top are more than worth it. In more remote spots like Ocracoke and Cape Lookout, you might even see some wild horses.
