‘The North Carolina Roots of Artist Ernie Barnes’

by
Ernie Barnes

Movement, grace and energy are hallmarks of the paintings of Ernie Barnes, a professional football player-turned-artist whose iconic work “Sugar Shack” was featured on a Marvin Gaye album cover and in the credits of the sitcom “Good Times.”

The North Carolina Roots of Artist Ernie Barnes” displays 37 oil and acrylic paintings, many unpublished, and personal artifacts. Barnes’ works chronicled his experiences with football, music, dance, education and church.

There is no admission charge for the popular exhibition, running through March 3 at the North Carolina Museum of History. While there, see other exhibitions honoring Black History Month.
